Windows Vista is only just being released in beta form.. you are going to
have to wait awhile before upgrading..

Never upgrade or install a new OS until it's been in the stores for at
least 6 months or until the first service pack comes out, whichever
comes first. If you adopt this rule you'll have a much easier life.

If you are developing an application or have a hardware requirement for
Vista, you should be part of the beta project and already be testing.

Well as soon it pops up on the shelves in your nearest computer store go on
down and read the requirements on the sleeve of the
Cd......................in about a year

Egads Oliver, it isn't even in beta testing yet. Do a search of
Microsoft+Longhorn and you should get some general ideas, but final feature
set is many months away.

as a rejoinder to my question, will the programs and applications created
for previous windows versions work on vista should this os hit the shelves
soon? this is my primary concern to date. thanks.

Which Previous Windows versions ? The family tree of Vista is
NT-2000-XP-Server2003-Vista. So if you're speaking about
applications that run on XP, they most certainly should continue
to work on Vista.

No one knows at this point, as the product has not even reached the beta
form yet.

It'll be at *least* another year before the release version hits the store
shelves. Early projections are for August 2006, but many, many things can
happen between now and then. Most releases are not on time.

Does this mean my windows 98 and windows ME programs that work on windows xp
will not run on Vista?

No - If they work under XP (even using Compatibility Mode), they
should continue to work using Vista - which will also have provisions
to run older applications using compatibility mode. At this point, the
1st Beta isn't even available (But very close). I wouldn't spend much
time mulling over issues with Vista. At some point in it's development
cycle there will some type of "Public Preview" program, but even
though Microsoft has some fairly definitive dates for Vista - it's likely
mid 2006 before it is available for review by the general public.

If you're that interested in it, you should go to Windows Beta and
enter yourself in the candidate pool for testing Microsoft products.

Vista doesn't exist yet. Anything anybody can tell you will at
best pertain only to the current test version. When it's actually
released, it may be very different. It could be a serious mistake
to make any firm plans based on current information.

Wait until its feature set, system requirements, etc., are
finalized before making any decisions. It's over a year away,
and a lot can change between now and then.
