I have in my 2000 server sp3 machine 4 such running processes.
Their are several sites stating that this is a virus and not an actual
needed process from windows.
I a have Symantec corporate edition 8 with latest definitions but nothing
indicates a virus

Any ideas ?

If the file name is SVSHOST.EXE then it surely is an infector !

Please go to McAfee (http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp) and/or Trend
(http://housecall.antivirus.com ) and perform an online scan of your platform then report
back your results.

Your server should have SP4. Do you at least have ms03-039 installed?

If you have SP4, you *still* need to install MS03-039 (or whatever
might supercede it)

actually i have SVCHOST.exe
and not SVSHOST.exe

i have the patch install...if this is a virus why my software didn't detect
it ?

If you already had it installed, you don't need to reinstall. But you should
have it in your Add/Remove Programs (Hotfix 824146).

(It being the Blaster patch).

Ah, sorry, I thought you were implying that SP4 contains the Blaster
patch. (Which it doesn't)

This is a legitimate file. There are viruses which infect unpatched
computers and create extra versions of the file in different
directories. If the latest virus definitions are applied, then you are
likely OK. But you could get a scan from the Symantec site.

Cheers,

Cliff

(PS I have 3 copies of the program running at the moment)
