svchost RpcSs 99% cpu

E

Edmond Dierickx

A brand new PC, Intel 2.8GHz.
New Windows XP SP1a system.
Nortin Internet Security 2003
RestoreIT
NTI CD Maker
WinDVD
are also installed.
When a user logs off, the process svchost for the RpcSs
service jumps from 0% to 99% CPU usage.
Logging on again, this svchost stays at 90-99%.

Workaround, is restart the system to log on another user,
then everything runs OK.

Any hints ?
Thanks in advance.

Have you USB devices? I have Trust USB Hub and after installing it I
had the same problem. The CPU usage was 99-100 %.
When I took off the hub the CPU usage was about 45-50 %. But curious
indeed, when I then reconnected the hub without rebooting the system,
the CPU-usage is and has been 0-2 % in rest state.
I think that there can be many reasons for this CPU problem.

There is only 1 USB device connected, a HP PSC750 printer,
scanner, copier.
The system is build on an Intel D865GBL Bayfield
motherboard, 512MB memory DDR333, Intel P4 2.8GHz.
AOPEN GeForce FX5600, 2 HDD Maxtor Diamondplus 9, 80GB,
Philips CDRW4048, BenQ FP567s LCD screen.
PS/2 keyboard and mouse.
No USB hubs connected, all devices properly configured
(according to System, Hardware Device Manager).
Software Installed:
WinXP Pro SP1a, + WinUpdate uptodate
Office 2003 PRO + Winupdate uptodate
Norton Internet Security + NAV 2003, LiveUpdate uptodate
Diskeeper Lite
NTI CD writer
RestoreIT from Farstone.

I am now trying to check other WinXP Pro systems with a
tool called Process Explorer, to compare the threads and
DLL's busy using the svchost process with high CPU.
