svchost runs at 99% cpu

I have big trouble and I'm really not sure what the cause
is! The story goes like this, the computer starts and
window logs in, everything running smoothly, for now.

I connect to the internet using dialup, but as soon as I
start MSN Messenger or ICQ svchost runs at 99% cpu. I'm
no computer expert but every now and then while svchost
runs at 99%, it fluctuates and lets some of the other
proccess work, and once ICQ or MSN has logged in (minutes
later) svchost runs normally, until u try to relog in, or
the program trys to establish connection. This happens
whether the Internet Firewall (built in XP) is running or
not.
I've searched high and low, and I can not find any
solution, i've read it's not svchost but maybe some
services it runs, I have updated windows XP, this windows
XP has started about 1 month ago when I got a new
computer.
I've had many older computers but no propblems like this!
What can I do? Can any one help?

This is not the legitimate svchost file. Usually a symptom of the Welchia
worm though it could be a different virus or worm. Run Stinger, from
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ also an up to date virus scan.

Thanks for that, tried it but it didn't come up with any
virus, and the same thing is still happening. I noticed
also when I go to transfer files through ICQ, it takes
the long time to establish connection which leads me to
think maybe it has to do with connection or network.
Unless if it is a worm, there is no defination for it
yet. But the latter to me is unlikely, because the lag is
all it causes.
Thanks

Trouble is that svchost is running a slew of services and you can't
easily find which is the cause of the trouble. Go to Control Panel -
Admin tasks - Services, and look down and highlight possible candidates
that are 'Started' , Each time click 'Stop' on the left and see if it
has an effect in Task Manager - if not, start it again.

Possible ones that have been associated with high CPU use and which you
could do without are Background Intelligent Transfer and Routing and
Remote Access. Universal Plug and Play and the SSDP Discovery (which go
together) are also worth trying *provided* you do not have a router
that needs them for address translation (NAT) purposes

If you find the culprit, double click it and set the Startup type to
Manual - that way if something turns out to need it then it will get
started regardless.
