SVCHOST problems

I've been following a number of threads on the subject of SVCHOST.EXE
problems in Windows 2000. My own particular flavour of it was getting
"svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows"
within a couple of minutes of starting a dial-up session.

My attempts at fixing this involved:

1. Re-install Windows 2000.
2. Upgrade from SP1 to SP3.
3. Use X-Setup to selectively remove programs from Startup.
4. I checked MS Knowledge Base: several articles but nothing was
relevant.
5. I updated my McAfee virus definitions.
6. Still convinced I had a virus, I tried PC-cillin...
7. ...and then Symantec's W32.Blaster.Worm removal tool.

Despite the weight of public opinion, no virus was found.

Finally I found the MS article 827227 which discusses Security
Bulletins MS03-026 and MS03-039. They both appeared to address
security holes, and therefore seemed preventatives rather than cures,
but out of desperation, I tried them and to my great surprise, they
(one or the other) seem to have done the trick.

So that's what worked for me. I hope this helps someone...

You don't need them both, I think. The second one includes the first.

I still think that you must have had Blaster...
