svchost problems

Alan

I am running winxp pro with all the recent updates.
In fact, I believe the last batch of (8?) security updates
was my most recent install of new programs.

In the last week, I have started to have problems with
some svchost process. It generates a "unable to write something"
error on shutdown. This seems to trigger another message
after the next startup, namely that svchost has encountered a problem
and needs to close. Restarting at that point doesn't generate
any messages either closing or restarting, but then the same
problem will reappear at a later shutdown after working with
the computer.

The tasklist /svc print shows 5 instances of svchost with groupings
of 2, 1, 28, 1, and 4 services.

My question: how can I debug this problem?

thanks in advance,
alan

Hi,
I belive I have the EXACT same problem as you. Your description is very
very similar to what I'm experiencing.

The first problem I have was the one that I describe in this posting:
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgr...eral&mid=f588e228-5183-4c18-8c8c-ff0d49037cae
I'm not sure if this is related to the problem you are describing, or
if this is another issue.

Some days ago I discovered a second problem (related to the first??)
that I sometimes get errors on shutdown from SVC-host.
This I described in this posting:
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgr...ment&mid=6a8774ca-bcdb-4855-af28-031a5f78fe83

As I wrote in these postings you might want to stop the Automatic
Update service (wuauserv) and also change it startup type to manual and
see if the problem goes away. It has gone away for me after I did that.
However, it's not any good solution, since you won't be able to use
Windows Update. There must be something else one can do, but what is
the problem??

If you come up with anything at all, please post it here.

/Henrik
