Help with svchost

Hi people

A little, yet very annoying, problem has arisen on my PC and I cannot find
out why it is happening.

For some reason my PC went up the wall and windows got corrupt. So I
formatted and done a fresh install of winXP pro (with SP2). This PC is
connected to the internet via a wireless pci card.

The problem I have is that a svchost starts taking 99% of my cpu usage and
renders my PC useless, unless I wait for about 5-10 mins when the usage will
drop to normal, but as soon as I open IE the same thing happens.

I have ended the svchost process via the task manager but this knocks out my
wireless connection and then the only thing I can do is restart the machine
to get reconnected for the same thing to happen again.

I never had this problem before the fresh install of XP and it's obviously
not a virus, which maybe leads me in the direction of some sort of hardware
failure?

Is there anybody out there that can shed some light on this problem and
maybe point me in the right direction for a solution.

Thanks in Advance.

How did you determin this?
"and it's obviously not a virus"

In a fresh install you can get infected within seconds without the proper
security ie. firewall a/v software.

I understand that it is possible, however, I always install a new OS without
any internet connection, then add it later. Before the connection is made I
made sure that the windows Firewall was on and the first site I went to was
MSupdate.

I think the chances of it being a virus is very slim, even though it's
possible to happen (plus I have formatted twice with the same result).

Get Process Explorer, and run it at startup. It should show you what is
using svchost.exe and eating the cycles. You might even find that it's
Windows Automatic Update.

Which instance of svchost is causing the problem? Make note of the
PID number for the problem instance in Task Manager.

Then open a command prompt window (Start - Run - CMD) and enter the
following command:

TASKLIST /SVC

Locate your problem instance of svchost by the PID number and make
note of the process names that are running under that instance. Post
that information back here.

If Tasklist is not installed on your computer you can download it from
http://www.xmission.com/~comphope/download/winxp.htm

Good luck

Hi Tyma,

Which version of Windows XP is installed? Home Edition or Professional? Service Pack 1 or 2?

Install all the Windows Updates, save for Update for Windows XP (KB916595) for the very last. This causes:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: (100)
Event ID: 1000
Date: 09/06/2006
Time: 8:41:46 PM
User: N/A
Computer: DININGROOM
Description:
Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00018fea.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The message error of the screen reads: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

The Windows Wallpaper comes up and the Taskbar fails to appear, right away. Then you get the error message after everything loads.

Go into Services and make sure that everything to set as follows:

Plug and Play Set to Manual
SSDP Discovery Service Set to Manual
Universal Plug and Play Device Host Set to Manual
Error Reporting Service Set to Automatic

Click Start > Right click My Computer and click Properties > Click Advanced > Under Performance click Settings > Click Advanced > Under Memory usage, Dot System Cache > Click Apply then OK. Do not Reboot yet. > Under Virtual memory click Settings > Highlight the Drive in which the operating system is installed on. Dot Custom size: Initial size (MB): Fill in 3070 > For Maximum size (MB) 4092 > Click OK and reboot the computer.

Note: On Virtual Memory, if you have 2 GB of Memory installed the initial size is one and a half size for 3070 figure entered above. If you have less, compute it for one and a half size size.

I had the same problem, until I fixed it.

What Anti-Virus Software and Firewall package are installed?

That is totally incorrect. Virtual memory paging file requirements
are *inversely* related to the amount of RAM installed.

Best approach is to leave it set to "System managed size". If you
want to fiddle with the settings then refer to the article by the late
Alex Nichol MVP at http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm and follow the
recommendations there.

Good luck
