svchost hogging CPU?

In the past few weeks, my PC suddendly becomes sluggish. Turns out a process
call svchost.exe is hogging 80 to 90% of the CPU time. Killing the process
returns the PC to normal speed and doesn't seem to have any other effect (no
app or tray icon died). I ran an online virus scan and nothing. Since
svchost is a windows process, is there a tool/util to tell me more about
this particular instance, e.g. what application or service is this
particular svchost associated with so that I can figure out how to disable
it?

I have found that the Automatic Updates service is a major factor to the
svchost.exe issue. Tests that I have run successfully indicate that if the
Automatic Updates service is turned off, the svchost.exe issue does not
occur. I have chosen to set this service to Manual. I turn it on only when
I want to update my system with current patches. This change has
significantly affected the performance of the systems I run.
