svchost.exe

Tony Ohara

When connected, either via DSL or standard dial up
connection, I get an error as follows:
svchost.exe has generated an error and will be closed by
windows...

This happens frequently and creates a problem for other
programs, e.g word can be registered nor cut/paste etc.

I have installed SP4 to no avail.

I tried to do the work-around suggested for WLAN but
since I dont have this, there is no tabs as suggested.

I did install a MS wireless router on top of my verizon
DSL modem and have an MS wireless card is used to connect.
thanks

Are you able to connect to the internet in any way? There is a recent
virus that kill the svchost.exe and takes over to emulate it. Boot the
machine, then go into the task manager and see if you find an
svchost.exe using up most of the resources.

Thanks,

Yes, I can still get access to the Internet. At times
my system will lock and even CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work.
So it seems this is a likely cause. What should I do? Get
a fresh copy of svchost.exe?

Hi,

I looked at the task manager and there are 2 svchost.exe
running. One has used 3.3 mb of mem and the other 8.4mb.
When I get the error, the svchost which had the 3.3 mb
disappears and the one with the 8.4mb remains. I can't
kill it or stop it from this location. Can you please
point me to the solution?

thanks
tony
