svchost.exe shuts down audio and server services

Hi,
I had to reinstall a machine on new year's day because of this and now the
problem is back.
1. xps2 (all patched) is booted.
2. everything loads.
3. After it has all loaded, the system pauses, the taskbar turns grey, the
fonts in the taskbar change and then reset back to normal xp blue etc.
4. Windows Audio and Server services are stopped.

I have to go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services to restart
them.

I also get them to automatically restart, which they have been doing.

About five minutes after they have been reset they shut down again and can't
be started.

This situation is now critical because Server services
(C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs) won't start at all. It tells me
that the file cannot be found. (Note that I have searched on good xp machies
for a netsvcs file to no avail)

I did a system restore tonight and it has worked again.

But I think it's only a matter of time before the netsvcs won't accept being
manually started again. This is a big problem in a home office as the machine
that is the problem is the server .....

I have done countless google, xp forum searches here and elsewhere and I
cannot find anything the same as this - I have found some similar and they
point to possible corruption of services when Automatic Updates are loaded.

Interestingly, I suspected when the problem first happened that it was due
to this too - but I really have no idea.

Oh - I have done spyware and av searches. Nothing.

Srvsvc.dll is the file that cannot be found.

See this for a fix....

Error message when starting the Server service in Windows XP
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/64/1/

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs starts *most* of the NT services.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\
CurrentVersion\SvcHost\netsvcs

netsvcs is part of the -k switch for svchost.exe and is the System User.

As opposed to these...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k NetworkService
NetworkService = (Network User)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalService
LocalService = (Local User)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k rpcss
rpcss = "RpcSs" (System User, Critical Service)

Hi,
this is not good - the Srvsvc.dll is in the system32 directory. I have
attempted to reinstall it but cannot do so using the cmd prompt method as
described.

I get the following message when doing so:

"Destination is not a directory: C:\WINDOWS\system32\srvsvc.dll."

Note that the srv.sys is not in the directory.

And again - here's the weird thing.... I restored a previous checkpoint and
at least then i was able to manually restart the service when it crasehd.

However today I accepted an automatic windows update - it disappeared from
the screen instalntly and then the corruption again occurred.

The Update definitely has something to do with this problem.

What I can't understand if this is a Windows problem, why after I rebuilt
the machine on Jan1 would it be striking me again?

It sounds like a virus.

What should I do next?

cheers

Hi Wesley
Great news.

On the day I did the extraction the problem persisted and, as explained in
previous post, I thought that the extraction did not work.

Next day I booted up and everything has been fine since. So it would seem
that the extraction did work.

So - anyone with svchost.exe problem which shuts down server services - note
that this works!

Many thanks for the help.

cheers

Glad to hear it.

When in doubt when making any kind of changes, reboot.

I am having the EXACT same problem that shaun in sydney had - stopped
audio and network services, taskbar distorting, and services stopping
again even after I manually started it. The system also says that I
have an Automatic Update, but when I go to click it, it disappears. I
am convinced that my problem also stems from a Windows Update because
my PC was running perfectly before. I tried your remedy of expanding
the two files from the WinXP CD but the problem still seems to
persist. Yes, I did restart after expanding the files. Can you think
of another cause/remedy that I can try? I'm desperate - I'm spending
way too much time on fixing this! This is the only forum where I've
found someone with the exact problem as I had but I have a feeling
that there are more of us out there. Any advice you can offer would
be greatly appreciated - thanks!
