svchost.exe local service locks up computer

When I connect a wireless adapter, I lose internet connection and I can't
reboot without svchost.exe local service failing to load properly and tying
up my computer. I have to go to processes and disable svchost.exe local
service and then use system restore.

Can anyone help?

Try using Process Explorer (free from http://www.sysinternals.com ) to find
out what's running under the svchost.exe process (use the PID number to
identify the correct instance of it).

There can be several processes running under one instance of svchost.exe -
and any of them can be the cause of the problem.

Here's some info on svchost.exe if you're interested:

Also, there are viruses that pose as svchost.exe - make sure your antivirus
and antispyware are updated and that you scan your system thoroughly.

Hi,

Did you install software that came with the wireless adapter and did it
include a connection manager? If so, then you probably have a conflict
between it and XP's wireless zero configuration service. Basically, you need
to choose one or the other, then disable or remove the unneeded one. If you
want to use the stuff that came with the card, then run services.msc and
disable the WZC service. If you want to use the WinXP service, uninstall the
connection manager software.
