svchost.exe is making me crazy.

R

Russell

it runs my cpu at 100%. it freezes my computer. it causes my tower to make a
humming noise. it makes me crazy.

ive tried disabling every auto update on my computer, because i read it was
connected to either my norton, or windows update.
ive read most of the posts here at microsoft forums and used every tweak
posted.
[except for the sponsers link you up with a $30montly].

sometimes it runs, i can see it taking up all of my cpu power in my
taskmanager, but i can still open and run other programs....but at some
point, and most of the time, it will take over, and anything i click on will
"hang", or stop for minutes at a time, until the humming in my tower stops,
and then all of the things i clicked on will begin to open or start.

ive run my norton antivirus, spybot, ad-aware, and ccleaner, and they find
no kind of virus. i usually have use my task manger to "stop
process"...(there it goes again! it just kicked in again!!), to make it stop
so my computer will work freely.

what is this thing? where did it come from? how do i fix it?
ive been thinking about calling bill gates and paying him his 40 bucks, or
whatever it is, and have them try and fix it for me.

any help you good people can give me will be rewarded. {you will feel better}.

thanks for taking the time to reply.

ok, im an x86.
ive downloaded and ran the shellx program, and im sorry, (im no techie, wish
i was tho), i cannot tell which of these add ons are using the most cpu.

ive followed every other procedure and been to every link you provided me,
except the hijack now. i havent downloaded that yet.

nass, im understanding that what is running on my computer when svchost.exe
is taking all of my cpu power, is probably my windows update.

i checked my windows update history and found that the last automatic update
that worked correctly, and i installed by clicking on the shield that showed
on my taskbar, was april 9th. it was this:
Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB948881)

that is when my troubles began, because the remaining updates i have
installed were all from me clicking on microsoft update and doing it
manually. looking for a fix i guess.

so, nass.....something happened in that last automatic download and install
that caused my problems. at least i beleive this to be the case.

if i download hijack this, and get a report on my computer, will you be able
to tell from that what is wrong? i can email it to you. will you be able to
see a problem with automatic update?

thanks so very much for your patience with me.

'tasklist' is not a command my computer recognizes. for whatever reason.
(your first link has me trying to find which services are mapped to which
instance of SVCHOST.EXE by running tasklist.exe)
thats helps me not.

and ive downloaded the hotfix and the wu update in your other link.

and my computer is still unresponsive.

so i have a memory leak, possibly, or its something else. and i will call
microsoft i guess and see if they can help me.

but i wanted to take the time to thank you for your help and patience.
