svchost.exe error, cannot install updates even without sp4

Hi- am finding problems installing updates on one
of my computers running windows 2000 professional.
i select about 31 updates, excluding the SP4 and exclusive
ones; sign the license; but then when i click on install
nothing happens.. this computer also had a svchost.exe
error
on startup which started appearing last week. Could this
be a virus manifestation that prevents installation?

Hey, I actually got similar svchost.exe errors on 5
different W2K workstations that were being updated. After
installing the newest service pack the errors left but now
our systems are crawling - anybody got any ideas?

Sounds like the MsBlaster worm to me
