svchost.exe - Application Error

Hi:

I have a friend who is receiving "Application popup: svchost.exe -
Application Error : The instruction at "0x745f2780" referenced memory at
"0x00000070". The memory could not be "read".

I found this Microsoft Article ID: 916089 on his error:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089. However, when you click on the MS
site to obtain the fix http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support
you get the MS site for Help & Support "Contact Us". This seems sorta
ludicrous in that MS wants you now to contact them to obtain the fix for a
known MS Windows Update problem. Why doesn't MS provide the site for the fix
rather than their site to contact them?

Has anyone encountered this before and if so did you find a solution
without going through the litany of trying to contact MS? Am I missing
something about obtaining MS's fix for this problem?

Thanks

You are encountering the procedure has for handling the distribution
of a Hotfix.

A Hotfix is intended to fix a particular problem in the circumstances
that Microsoft are not prepared to issue an update for all computers
using the programme / application. This may be because they are still
researching the problem.

Whilst the Hotfix may be intended for a known problem that does not
mean that a users understanding of the nature of the problem is such
that they can determine properly whether they have the problem the
Hotfix is intended to fix or a similar but different problem. The
contact process helps to verify whether the user has the particular
problem or some other problem.

Hi Gerry:

I appreciate your reply, but I do not agree with your rationale. If
someone has a specific error code and has the knowledge to run the problem
down to the point of finding Microsoft's hotfix for their problem, then they
sure do not need to encounter further bureaucratic nonsense. You could say
what you said about any software problem.

Seems to me to be redundant to have to further pursue the hotfix, as I
have never encountered anything from MS like this before. FYI I have sent MS
an email with my comments and asking for the hotfix.

Thanks

Microsoft make the rules not you or I. If you want to "p... into the
wind" then that's your prerogative. I tried to find an explanation of
the purpose of the procedure before sending my last post but I failed.
I also tried to ascertain whether you have to call the US if you live
in another part of the globe. Another brickwall, although perhaps I
could call Microsoft if it was an issue here!

Hi Gerry:

Again appreciate your comments and have a nice day. I did a deployment to
RAF Benson in the mid 80's and even participated in a race there on a
Saturday morning. Must say you Brit's take your running very seriously.

Thoroughly enjoyed my tour there, as well as made many good friends. One
in particular was a chap named Geoff Vincent that somehow I lost his address
and wish many times that I had it. He and his family made me feel very much
at home there.

Thanks
