svchost errors

Just recently installed OEM copy of WIN 2000 PRO on
AMD/MSI motherboard based computer. Only Apps installed:
motherboard utilitities plus internet dial-up info.

Get error "Svchost.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log will be created." Program does not restart
from run prompt. W/o svchost running can't view events,
comm status and can't cut & paste for starters.

Only SP1 on W2K disk, SP4 upgrade disk included but
corrupted.

What could be causing this? incompatable w/MSI utilities?
Will SP4 fix this?
 
appreciate the reply. In this case, I have a freshly
formated drive, load Win 2K, set-up dial Internet access,
go online and receive the svchost errors almost
immediatly. I'm not a worm expert, but I don't think they
get on my system and go to work that quickly, do you?
