svchost error

Hi,

I built a new machine and installed 2000. Jumped online and went to update
windows. Just after starting download of SP4, I get an error dialog that
says svchost.exe has had an error. I downloaded SP4 (many hours) but
unfortunately it failed to install. I don't know if the SP install failure
is related or not to svchost.

Any ideas? I really hate wasting all these hours.....

Check the countless posts in this newsgroup that have svchost in
the Subject line.

Pegasus is 100 percent correct.

Try running a virus scan
www.antivirus.com
http://securityresponse.symantec.com

When you find out what you contracted, write it down, go to
Google and type the name of it and the word "virus". Find a
fix sheet and print it. Do everything it says to do line by
line or it will not be effective.

Afterward, go back to Google and type the word "stinger". An
AVP company names NAI (Network Associates) and download
program called Stinger that helps rid more than 30 viruses
(virii). After you download, install it and run it. After
that...

YOU need to get serious about protecting your computer. Get
an AVP, a firewall, AdAware, and SpyBot S&D. You can find
them at www.spychecker.com . Please take my advice, you will
be much happier in the long run. Good Luck.
