I have a laptop that I hooked up to our company network. It set the automatic updates for Windows XP and they have been disabled for changing.
I want to be able to take this laptop home and chance these settings, but they are grayed out and I can't changes the settings. What do I need to do? support.Microsoft.com doesn't have any help.

Hi Jason

It sounds like the SUS server has been set up with a Group Policy to enforce updates at certain time(s). I'd say the Group Policy has been set for machine accounts so it no matter who logs onto the laptop it is greyed out. You will need to talk to an administrator of the network to remove your computer account from the Group Policy (If they let you...)
Hope this helps
Regards

Daniel

When policies are unavailable it is because they have been set from Active Directory.
You should bring this to the attention of those running the domain infrastructure.
It is not at all uncommon for us to need to handle mobil machines differently.

Your options are disjoin from the domain, or get them to alter how the domain is
defined for mobil clients.

It sounds as though the system is a member of your work domain, or - if you
don't have a domain - somehow fell under the scope of the management
policies on your corporate network.

Is this your personal laptop, or is it a corporate asset?
