Super Slow Start Up

Hi!
I am having a problem since I purchased my compaq
presario with windows xp. After starting the computer it
takes forever to get to the point where I can access any
of my programs. It takes 3-4 minutes to start up. The
page loads like there is too much on the hard drive, too
many programs, not enough memory. I have anothere compaq
presario with windows xp and the start up is zippy-no
problems.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Any chance you have two nics?

If so, set the IP on the second to a static IP like 192.168.0.1 so it
doesn't try to get an ip. That usually eats up about 30 seconds if it
attempts to get one via DHCP sometimes.

It seems that one thing that Compaq likes to do is start
a whole bunch of programs that you will most likely never
use. Try running MSCONFIG from the run command and
unchecking everything in your startup tab. Reboot. If
your boot time decreases then go back in MSCONFIG and
only check the ones that you would like to start upon
start up.

Nope- didnt work! I looked on my other compaq and there
are a lot of programs on the start up page. I deleted the
items with virtually no effect? Any ideas?
