Sun seems to have 2 versions of Java 2 for Windows. Anyone know
which is the best for windows XP-SP2:
The runtime environment for SE 5.0 or SE 1.4.2.
It would be interesting to know what the difference is and why two
versions?
thanks!

JRE v5.0

....I also use JRE v5.0. Everytime I update the Sun Java, I uninstall the
previous version.

Yes,but it takes up 170MB as opposed to 108MB for SE 1.4.2 and for what?
It's about time someone came up with a 2-3MB alternative to this bloated
ware.

No, you can tell it to reduce the size of the JAVA cache. The default is 50MB, I suggest
10MB.

In Today's world of NTFS and >80GB hard disks less than 200MB isn't too much of a problem
and on NTFS you can compress the "C:\Program Files\Java" folder and sub-folders for
increased savings.

That's very good news indeed. But just how do you reduce the size of the Java
cache?

start --> settings --> control panel --> java
general tab --> settings

The best Java is, of course, no Java. Unless you need vibrating flames on a
toaster.

If you must use Java, use Micros~1's rendition. At least you know it'll be
around for a while.

If you are referring to MS VM, its history, never to be updated
again. I'm not a real Java fan but it is very difficult to program
things like clocks, etc., with HTML.

By the way, does anyone have a nice day, date (time would be nice
also) module for my home page - either HTML or Java?

The last update redirected me to the 5.0SE , which is the
same as 1.4.2. The JAVA ws desktop is still there, but runs
only as required.
