Hello all,

I just got a new computer to do most of my office work. We have a program
on our old computer, a P1 that will only run on it - nothing faster. It is
a FoxPro program. I don't have room for 2 keyboards and 2 monitors on my
desk. Is there some way I can use the monitor and keyboard form the new
computer and tie the two computers together to access the program which
needs to stay on the P1 with windows 98? I was thinking of a monitor
switch, but this might be hard on the new LCD monitor, and I would still
have to have two keyboards.

Any help, ideas or point me in a direction.... would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks
Gary

Not if you use a KVM - Keyboard, Video, Mouse - switch.

Electronic ones can be had for under 30USD for a two-port, sometimes
with cables included.

KVM switch - one Keyboard, mouse & monitor & anywhere from 2 to 8 PCs and
more depending on which switch you buy. I use a D-Link DKVM-4 at the moment
(which will switch 4 PCs) and used to have a DKVM-2. Never a problem with
them. Can't see why this should cause any particular problem with and LCD
screen assuming it uses standard connections. You need to make sure you buy
the right cables though - the D-Link ones are specific and not cheap.

Thanks guys, that seem to be what I am looking for. I looked it up and the
data says it supports PS/2keyboards and AT keyboards using an AT to PS/3
adapter.

Keyboard: 6 pin mini din female ps/2
Mouse 6 pin mini din female ps/2
Video 15 pin connector for VGA, SVGA, CGA, and Multisync.

I have an LCD flatscreen and a USB mouse and keyboard. Am I out of luck?

Thx
Gary

PS just looked at the mouse and keyboard manual and they can be used with an
attachment to PS/2. My concern is just the screen then.

FoxPro 2.6 for Windows and the divide by zero/divide overflow error? There is a
patch available that will fix it and allow it to run on faster computers:

Use a USB-PS/2 adapter. My Logitech trackball with USB connector came
with such an adapter. Good thing because I needed that to connect to
the IOGEAR KVM switch.

I'll second that recommendation. I use a KVM with an old ISA computer
running Win98SE and another faster one running WinXP. I can have both on
at once, or only one of the two on, and the KVM sorts out inputs and
outputs without a problem.

You need to buy a KVM switch (stands for Keyboard, Video, Mouse). It allows
you to run two computers with one keyboard, monitor, and mouse.

They also make DVI and USB KVMs. All four combinations can be had.

I understand that is the error. I believe I tried that patch a few years
ago, but it did not do anything. What I have is an actual industry specific
program written in foxpro. I have never actually had to install foxpro,
only the program they sold me. So I don't think there was any way to take
advantage of that fix. I sure wished it would work as it is a pain in the
butt to have this old computer kicking around.

I appreciate your trying to help out me out with this problem.

Thanks,
Gary

Hi,

I don't have a software solution for you, but it sounds like getting a 2
port KVM switch might solve your problem, assuming that the old PC can work
with "normal" monitors. Having a KVM between the 2 machines would allow you
to have just 1 keyboard, monitor (the "V" in "KVM"), and mouse, and switch
between the 2 PCs using a hotkey.

2-port KVMs are fairly cheap. Our local Microcenter has one for $19. You'd
still need to have the 2 PCs (the old one and the new one) hanging around,
but at least no software changes (the KVMs are pure hardware).

Have you considered a CPU slowing app to enable the old program to run on
the new box? Check out this link, http://www.hpaa.com/moslo/

Do a Google search for "CPU slowdown" for more options.

Ok I pick up a D link one. A few bugs. The LCD screen can only go to a
certain resolution, not near as much as stated on the box. So a bit blurry.
The old computer can't handle the usb mouse I have with the ps2 adapter so I
have a separate mouse on each computer. Not a big deal but a vast
improvement over having 2 monitors and two keyboards on the desk. I love
the hotkey swap between computers.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Hmm. Well IOGEAR has a KVM with PS2 connectors for both keyboard and for
mouse (I have one). Not sure about the video, but you might want to check
it out. Be careful though, they have a PS2 version and a USB version.

I've looked without success for a KVM that also includes speaker in/out.
Does anyone here know if such a device exists (at a reasonable price)
Thanks

I assume this is FoxPro for Windows 2.6? If so there is a patch
available that fixes the bug that stops FoxPro running on a 'fast' PC.

We still use FoxPro for some legacy apps at work...

I'm not sure where I got the patch:

C:\Projects\PSI>C:\FPW26\Patch2x.exe /?

Program to patch Foxpro for Windows
to prevent the Divide By Zero / Overflow error
on 333+ MHz processors. Works on assorted versions.

Syntax:
C:\FPW26\Patch2x.exe <filename>

where <filename> is the name of the file to be patched, usually
foxprow.exe or foxw2600.esl

Yes, they're made. Dunno about "reasonable price" - what's
reasonable to me, might not be to you <B-)

Thanks for the tips, but I'm not sure if this would work for me. I have
the program which is written in FoxPro, but I do not have anyway to
recompile it. i.e. FoxPro is not actually loaded on my computer, just the
program.

Thanks again,
Gary
