Suggestion For Microsoft

I may have missed it somewhere, but is there a way to order the threads
returned by a search in "DATE" order? It would seem to be much more helpful
to review newer ones first. Instead of finding a solution and trying it only
to find out that it is no good because it only applied prior to SP2 and you
now have SP2 installed seems to waste a lot of time.

I suggest another dropdown box to allow ordering threads by Date or
Alphabetical at least.

Real newsreaders have done these things for years. I'll bet you are using
the web based interface; if so, you should switch.

Microsoft does not monitor any of these newsgroups for suggestions. You would be
better served by accessing these newsgroups with a proper newsreader rather than
using the web-based system.

You probably have WIndows XP, so that would mean that you have Outlook
Express, and can simply add

msnews.microsoft.com

as a server for a new News account (tools, accounts, Add, News). Then, you
can download the messages, sort by date, and not have to deal with the web
interface.

With OE you can download up to 999 message headers at a time.

I suggest you learn to use a REAL Usenent news reader.

the web based interface; if so, you should switch.

I use both. The web based is good for initial searches when one has a
problem since it can search all of the message text without requiring a
local copy of every message.

A newsreader, however, is much better when one is carrying on a
"conversation."

Search, can greatly help locating relevant material.

Tools > Options > Read > Get XXX headers at a time

You may set this option as high as 1,000. Right-click on the newsgroup in
Folders pane > Synchronization Settings > select New Messages Only. Now
every time you open the newsgroup (or hit F5), you will download the
next-newest set of headers/messages.

When you feel you've downloaded enough headers/messages, again right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane and select Catch Up Now. This will Mark as
Read all messages on the server, including ones you've not yet downloaded.
Now return to "Get XXX headers at a time" and uncheck the option completely;
then compact the folder.

From now on, OE will only download headers/messages posted to the server
since you last checked (polled) for messages.

With OE you can download up to 999 message headers at a time.

Actually you can put almost any number you want here, up to 1000. But note
that you are LIMITING the downloads to ONLY this number. If you want ALL
the headers, then uncheck the checkbox to the left of the option. For
active newsgroups like this one, the first time you display the newsgroup,
it could take much more than a minute to get all the headers if you have a
high speed connection. People on dialup might want to try this on
newsgroups with less traffic and go away for the weekend while they do it
for this one. I currently have 23,758 headers on this newsgroup and 32,449
on the Vista.general newsgroup.
