Hi all. I have a small business client who has a windows 2000 SBS network
with ten workstations. They are currently backing up about 26GB of data to
an IDE array in the server. Their current tape drive is a 4/8Gb dat and is
clearly inadequate. Total disk capacity of the server is around 130Gb and
they have just bought a document management system which will no doubt
increase the backup requirements over the months to come. I have suggested a
160/320GB SDLT solution which is quite expensive and they are balking. Have
any of you got any other ideas? I like the idea of backing up the entire
server to a single tape but maybe this is overkill?
Cheers,
Bill

A very low-cost solution would consist of rotating several
160 GByte hard disks, each installed in a Mobile Rack drawer.
This would make for a very fast and very reliable backup. If
you installed them on the server then you would have to shut
down the server each time you change disks.

I believe there are some suppliers who sell racks that
let you hot-swap IDE hard disks. Check Google - it returns
more than 5,500 hits for "IDE disk" "hot swap".

I use an external USB enclosure, and several IDE hard disks. You can change
hard disks in this enclosure (Sarotech) without tools, so this weekly
procedure will take less than five minutes.

Best regards
