I am running XP Home and have used Windows Update previously with no
problem. Suddenly, now when I go to Windows update it tells me I have to be
an administrator. As the only user on this PC, that is what I am. I did
recently use DCOMbulator to disable DCOM. Could that be the problem?

Help please.

Easy enough to find out. Run DCOMbulator again and enable DCOM.

.
Yep....do a system Restore to before you disabled DCOM.

I did that. Re-enabled DCOM and rebooted. Still tells me I am not an
administrator.

I turned my firewall (ZA) off and back on. Still nothing.

What do I do?

Just thought of something else. A few days ago I downloaded and installed
Raxco's Perfect Disk and ran it . It is a defragmenter that moves the
positioning of files during bootup. Could that be the problem?

Thanks.

Thank God for Restore.

I am back in working order and update recognizes me again. By a process of
elimination I found out it was my installing Gimp for Windows that seems to
have been the culprit. Not sure, but it looks like it.
