suddenly not connecting to incoming server

I have been using Outlook with a particular email account for about 5 years,
with no problems. I just tried adding an additional account (Gmail). I was
unable to connect to the incoming server, even though I did everything
exactly as Gmail instructed and tried several times to make it work. I tried
both manual configure and auto configure, which required a download.
(Incidentally I have successfully added Gmail in the past.) I finally just
removed that account. Now my original account, which was working perfectly
fine before I tried adding Gmail, is also no longer connecting to the
incoming server. Help! Thank you.
 
POP is enabled on the gmail side?

I've never found pop.gmail.com to be all that consistent.
 
Yes, it's enabled. But at this point I'm more concerned about my original
account not working! Now it's saying that it was able to connect to the
incoming server, but not log on.
 
Correction -- it's saying that it can FIND the incoming server, but not
connect/lon on.
I am SO dependent on Outlook, this is killing me!
