Suddenly can't read CD? Hm?

Well, it says "Windows can't read from this disk. This disk may be corrupted
or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows."

I've been using this CD for several months but suddenly my laptop just won't
read it. I'm using Windows XP, but I don't know which version, but I know
it's not SP2.

Anybody know what could've happened?

Does the CD read in other computers? If not, it got damaged from daily
use. Try cleaning it. If the CD reads fine in other computers, you
could try cleaning your laptop's optical drive. You can get CD drive
cleaners at the store.

Perhaps it has a scratch. Perhaps it is dirty. Perhaps the CD reader has
gone bad. There a lots of possibilities.

Strangely enough, my CD reader can read DVDs and other CD-roms and/or
CD-R/RWs. But this particular one just won't work.

What's more, when I copied a similar disc to a CD-R, the reader can't read
it, but other computer can. What's wrong?

A likely reason is that the laser which reads/writes CD-R has gone bad. The
various formats use different wavelengths hence the drive could handle one
type but not another.

I suspect that the drive is a prime candidate for replacement.

What do you mean "copied a similar disc"? The troubleshooting steps are
to determine if the problem is with one particular disk or with your
drive. The only way to do this is to:

1. Put the disk in another computer and see if it is read properly.
2. If it isn't, you know the disk is trashed. You might be able to
rescue it with cleaning or you might not.
3. If you *can* read the disk in another computer, make a copy of it and
see if your cd drive will read the copy.
