Sudden switch of default ip gateway and ip address

I have two computers both have win XP home ed. with all the latest updates.
They are both connected to a router, which is in turn connected to a cable
modem.
Both have been working fine untill recently.
On one of them, i suddenly lost network connections. When I query with
ipconfig /all, I find that the correct local ip (which is normally assigned
by the router in the range of 192.168.123.100-199) has been reassigned to
another address. Specifically, 169.254.240.50. Nothing I have tried yet has
been able to restore communications with this computer. I have even
uninstalled the nic and did an upgrade reinstall of windows.

Eingram,

Generally, the router will provide the ip addresses (it contains a DHCP server).

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I had a similar problem with my Linksys router. All was setup to use DHCP
and then they wouldn't connect. I upgraded the firmware and now I am able
to use DHCP. Are you able to connect with the modem connected directly to
the computers? When I did this DHCP was working properly. Just a thought
through experience in the last couple of days.

I have two operating systems on the same computer.
Please understand that this setup has been working fine for three years.
Also, I have xp pro on the same computer and can connect to the other
computer and the internet fine, so it isn't in the router or the nic.
It has to do with something in the xp home ed. that changed suddenly.
suddenly the router cannot see the old computer when it's booted into the
home edition but it can see the old computer fine when it's booted into the
xp pro version.

This indicates that your system is setup to use DHCP but the DHCP
server, for some reason, is unreachable or unable to assign an IP
address. 169.254.x.x is called the automatic private IP address and is
assigned whenever a node is set to auto-configure but there is no DHCP
server available, such as when you have an ad-hoc LAN gaming network setup.

Open your Local Area Connection properties to the Support tab and click
the "Repair" button or enter "ipconfig /renew" at a command prompt and
see if DHCP can assign an address.

If not, you may have a physical network problem or a software stack
problem. To test this, enter an alternate configuration of a
192.168.123.x address, mask of 255.255.255.0, default gateway of
192.168.123.254, and DNS address of 68.230.242.25 to test and see if you
can connect. Your alternate configuration will be used instead of APIPA
169.254.x.x and should allow you to connect if your physical connection
and TCP/IP are working. If not, then you can focus on your computer
setup. If you can connect, then you can start debugging the DHCP service.

These are the exact types of numbers I was getting until I upgraded the
firmware. My setup was running fine for the past two years until two days
ago and then the DHCP server would not assign the IP address. Again, after
upgrading the firmware all is well. This is only my situation yours may be
different, but the results I see from you are what I was getting. Good
Luck!

Are you refering to the firmware for the nic or for the router?
See, the same nic and router work fine when I'm booted into Win XP Pro on
the same computer . This is what is throwing me. Same hardware and firmware
but diff is only between XP PRO and XP Home ed.

"repair" on the support tab. doesn't work even with the new ip stack.
I entered the alternate info, but received the message that the nic was not
in a state capable of being released or renewed. Also I noticed that dns (or
ip routing) was not enabled.

I am speaking of the router firmware.

Alas, I have the latest firmware for my SMC Barricade router already
installed. and there is no firmware upgrade for the nic (linksys LNE100TX-v4)

I need to add that this is my wife's computer, and I just disinfected three
viruses which somehow got in despite the Panda active protection. I have
examined the registry and the ARIN site is the one in the registry. Although
I have removed the viruses, there is probably residual damage. I guess I
need to "clean install" windows, though I hate to. Do you have any
suggestions as to how to save data proir to that?

There are malwares that insert components into the Layered Service
Protocols stack and if the removal did not repair the LSP stack, then
your network connection will not work.

Get LSPfix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm. I recommend that you not
remove any components that are present, only repair the damage caused by
missing files.

If LSPfix can fix it, then you won't need to reinstall Windows.
