sudden crashes

I have had several weeks of sudden unexpected Windows stoppage and restarts.
I determined that some at least were caused by a failing hard drive. I have
replaced the hard drive. The stoppages, which were daily, are now
occasional. Perhaps two in the last 2 weeks.

What I can make of the error messages on the Event viewer is that the
stoppage may be caused by a driver. I have added several software packages
recently including the newest version of Norton Anti-virus, Ipwich FTP, and
several others. Most of these were downloaded.

Is there any system that can check for driver problems to pin point the
cause (or causes)?

DRIVER error codes:

You may be able to get more info from the Event viewer.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;308427
Or,
Start > Run, copy & paste > eventvwr.msc /s & press Enter.
Scroll down to the last time your computer crashed and it should tell
you what device/driver caused the problem?

I followed through all the links you gave me. I found very little helpful.
I did subscribe to EventID.net which I believe I found from your link to
techrepublic.com.
This provided one source of my error but that source (Sonic driver) did not
apply to me. From there I was led to Dell Crash Analysis Tool. (Mine is a
Dell computer). This software reported finding no driver problems with my
machine.

EventID promises to notify me of any new info regarding my specific event
ID. I seem to have come to a point where I can only wait.

Thanks for your response.

No need to wait, just put your error code or exact error message into a
search engine, such as google.
