Subwebs vs Webs

As a web designer, I have a lot of clients sites that I
have created in Frontpage along with my own. The hosting
company that I use have now suggested that I perhaps put
all my clients sites under my own site as subwebs as they
believe it would be better managed that way.

I have in the past tried this but only with one subweb
under mine. I found that if both my site and the subweb
had the use of shared borders, the subweb's contact
details (which I had in the bottom border) overrode my
own! Because of this, I thought it might be because both
home pages had the same name ie, index.htm. So I changed
the subweb's home page to homepage.htm. This wasn't a
problem as the subweb was being used as a test anyway and
then was removed and put into its own site's name.

Could you please tell me if the use of subwebs is
advisable and if so, what steps do I take to stop the
above problem from happening?

You may email me if you wish as that may be easier in this
instance and if need be, I can give you more background
information.

Thanks

If I was a client and had registered a domain so that my site was
www.mysite.com and it got changed to www.mysite.yoursite.com I would not
be happy and I would move my site elsewhere.

I'm really surprised that your hosting company suggested this. There must
be an ulterior motive here. For them anyway.

ps. tessa, shared borders don't extend to subwebs.

No, no, no!!! I didn't mean that the subwebs would end up
being an extension of my domain name. They would retain
their domain name but for hosting management, they would
look like 'baby webs' as part of my account.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean, the only way I've seen a subweb appear is as Steve previously stated...but then again I'm no guru...I'd have to refer you back to Steve on this one.

confused.

This is possible by having a hosting service allowing you to point a domain name to a specific directory under a single IP address. In this case, you would not need a subweb, and your web address would not appear as a subdomain under your main domain.

sory for stepping in, but as a web designer maybe you can
help me with my problem:
On the home page, visitors via a pay button get directed
on to the second page of the site and start surfing. But
because of the navigation bars, visitors would be (if
they hit the home button inadvertently)sent back to the
home page and would have to pay again.
I've tried every level but can't get rid of the home page
on the navigation bars
Any suggestion? By the way, I'm using Front Page 2000 and
XP
Thanks

oh, i see. I don't see what the advantage would be though.
thanks!

If the subweb and your site had shared borders and your own were overwritten
then those 'subwebs' are NOT subwebs but FOLDERS .... subwebs will not use
anything of the root folder shared borders and include pages don't work
across webs .. this includes (forgive the pun) subwebs.. ergo your using
Folders.... you can tell the difference by the icon .. a folder is just a
small yellow folder and a subweb is the same thing with a world on it.

The reason they are saying change to subwebs is probably because your site
is expanding and hosts think that by using subwebs it will publish much more
easily. You should have been using subwebs from the beginning anyway.

The only other way this overwriting could have occurred is if you got mixed
up and had made a folder at one point instead of a subweb .... and after
that made subwebs ... test it again .. make sure you are in the subweb ...
this means FrontPage should open up purely within the subweb not as part of
root .. if you can see all the other 'subwebs' still then your in a folder.
save the shared border content in the main web .. and enter your new details
in the subweb of choice (make sure it has a world on the folder icon) ...
this will work.

Subwebs and folders can have and SHOULD have an index.htm page (or whatever
your host uses index.html default.htm default.html) including the images
folder even if left blank to prevent perusal of your files. This would have
made no difference .. I think you are using folders not subwebs, or indeed
that is what you tested.

Aah, OK
Then it sounds like they're talking about virtual hosting / shared IP
address.
That would work, and each *web* is it's own domain.
