Substantial DECREASE in file size?

All I have seen are comments about increases in file size. Can anyone explain
why a conversion of a file from Word 2003 to 2007 would DECREASE the size of
the file? It went from 910 KB to 257 KB. I've done a side-by-side and it
appears nothing was lost, but is it possible Microsoft was able to actually
streamline file sizes????

Note on the file type... it is a file based on a custom template that I
created. The custom macro-enabled template has also been upgraded to 2007,
and the file in question has been re-linked to the new .dotm template file.

Thanks,

This is to be expected. The actual data in Word 2007 format takes far more
space than in Word 2003, but the files are zipped, and so end up smaller.
