First make up your mind. Do you want XP or WinMe? Second, is XP an
upgrade CD? Third, Have you got media for ME handy?

If you want to install XP and you have an upgrade CD for it and you have
media for ME - then do a clean install of XP and when prompted to browse
for a qualifying product, just insert your ME cd and when it is
recognised, remove it and put back your XP CD and continue from there.

If however, the XP CD is full retail version then clean install is very
simple as you don't have to worry about ME CD.

If you want to install ME then start with the floppy start-up disk and
boot with it. You will need to format your drive as it looks like it is
already messed up with failed attempt to install XP, then ME and ME
again this time!.

Have you backed up your personal documents? Also, clean install only
installs Windows. It does not install any applications such as Office
etc. You need CDs for these as well to install.

Hello Anon...thank you for your input.
ok where do i start
I wanted XP however pc did not so I removed it.
I have tons of ME media for it I have been running it for a long time so
I have lots ... I was just hoping to make the move to XP :( I suspect
ram may be an issue. As this is the 2nd pc in the house we will have to
settle for ME

boot with it. You will need to format your drive as it looks like it

again this time!.

I have done this and redone it :( and redone it.

If this is the OEM version of ME it can only do a clean install or repair
of an existing install. It cannot upgrade what is already there.

If you are trying to run a repair install, ME setup apparently is not
recognizing whatever's left of Windows as a repairable Windows ME setup.

What steps exactly are you using to prepare the drive? Whatever you're
doing, there is something on that drive that ME setup is interpreting as a
the presence of a previous "operating system." If you've fdisk before,
suggest trying fdisk /mbr to remove any traces of boot code in this area.
Could also try deleting your partitions, recreating them and then
formatting before running ME setup.

Also, I think you should move this question over to the WinME newsgroups
since that is the target operating system for this computer.

Is this thread now closed? Is the problem solved? If not then I can
suggest another method to solve it.
