Styles question--Word 2003

I noticed something odd while trying to modify a style I use in a
letterhead. I have a few styles in the "letterhead" part of the document in
headers and footers (e,g, name, address, etc., in different fonts, sizes,
etc.) as opposed to the "body" of the document . If I open the header or
footer and put the cursor in the middle of some text with oneof those
letterhead styles the little styles window shows that particular style as
highlighted. But if I click on the little down arrow in the style window
for that style, I am informed in Select All that the style is not currently
in use! But of course it certainly IS in use! I can modify the style with
no problem. But Select All continues to report it as "not in use." If I do
the same thing in the body of the letter, each and every one of those styles
shows up as "in use" and with the correct number of times. This
inconsistency has no functional consequences that I can see, beyond puzzling
me. Is this merely a bug? I can't say that I noticed the problem
previously but then I have never spent a lot of time working specifically
with styles in footers and headers. Or am I looking at a corrupt document?
Actually, my document is a Word template (i.e., *.dot).

The text you are citing only means that Select All cannot be used in headers
and footers.

You have misinterpreted what is not in use; this refers not to the style but
the "Select All" feature, which is not available unless you have "Keep track
of formatting" checked on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.

Hmm, I believe Select All doesn't work in headers and footers, even if "Keep
track of formatting" is enabled.

I'm sure you're right. I never have "Keep track of formatting" enabled and
never use the feature, so I wouldn't have noticed; but it seems that
misinterpretation of "Select All: Not Currently Used" is very common.
