Styles in Word 2003

I've created a new template full of styles just for this template - this is
for a long long doc with lots of headings (I, II and III and numbers, 1, 2, 3
& 4, and body 1, 2, 3 & 4).

The styles constantly and consistently loose their formatting - driving me
crazy. HELP!

Thanks

Yawrood, without more detail I'm not sure if I can help you--but I can
sympathize with your frustration. ;) What exactly seems to be happening?

Without any details, one thing to look at is whether you've accidentally set
the styles to update automatically. I don't have Word 2003 in front of me at
the moment, but when you make a new style, there's a checkbox toward the
bottom of the dialog box that says "update automatically" or some similar
text.

When that's checked, chaos will ensue. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/ModifyAStyle.html

for more. Hope this helps!

Open the .dot, select a Style that you've created & go into the Modify Style
dialog - Is there a check in the box to "Automatically Update "? If so,
remove the check, see if that helps.

Otherwise more detail is needed including version info.

Hi Benj5: Yes, I did finally turn on "update automatically". I didn't for a
while but then thought it may help. It hasn't.

What I did exactly is created a brand new template, based on normal with new
Headings I, II, III, new numbers 1, 2, 3,4 and new body 1, 2, 3, & 4. I set
each with the style I wanted - indents, haning (or not) paragraph styles,
font size, space before and after, etc., etc., etc. The new Headings and
bodies all work fine. The number styles are from some other galaxy. They
just refuse to hold a hanging indent of .4, refuse to retain justified
alignment, or anything else I assign.

Anyway, I thank you for trying to help.
