Styles and Outline Numbering

Styles & Numbering

I'm working in a 400 page contract. I was tasked with "fixing" the numbering.
Styles were not set up originally, so I am attempting to apply styles to the
document. I have been successful up until i reached section 2.12.

I need 2.12.3.1 to repace 2.11.9.3 below. It seems as though it wants to
continue numbering from the previous section. Can anyone help?

This is what I want
2.11.9.2.3
2.12
2.12.1
2.12.2
2.12.3
2.12.3.1

This is what I get
2.11.9.2.3
2.12
2.12.1
2.12.2
2.12.3
2.11.9.3

Assuming that you have linked numbering to styles, have you tried placing
the insertion point in the 2.11.9.3 paragraph and pressing Ctrl+Q (which
resets paragraph formatting to that of the underlying style)?

If you are saying that no level 4 numbering is correct, you may have to
recreate the numbering for that level.

For Word 2003, use the Modify Style dialog box (for your level 1 style) to
edit the numbering; click Format, Numbering, which takes you to the
Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box. If you are using Word 2007,
place the insertion point in the first level 1 paragraph and click Home tab
| Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. Word displays the multilevel
list dialog box. Click level 4, and then clear the contents of the "Number
format" box ("Enter formatting for number" box in Word 2007) and recreate
it, adding the numbering for the current level as well as numbering for
previous levels, typing the periods in.

Thanks Stefan -

I tried ctrl + Q and nothing has changed.

All level 4 is not incorrect, I;m not sure why it's not restarting.

Are you available for consulting?

I'm having the same problem with other sections. I can't figure out how to
tell it to not continue numbering from the previous section

This is what I need
2.20 FRAUD AND ABUSE
2.20.1 General

This is what I get
2.20 FRAUD AND ABUSE
2.19.4 General

For restarts, you are going to need the "Restart list after" option (Word
2007) or "Restart numbering after" (Word 2003).

But you may have to recreate the numbering from the start, in order to get
it right. Which version of Word are you using? Which styles are you using?
The built-in headings?

It appears to me that your outline numbering levels have become disconnected
from each other, that is, Level 3 has forgotten that it's supposed to start
over after Level 2. I _strongly_ recommend that you put your cursor in the
first numbered paragraph in your document and re-set up the numbering outline
again. Nine times out of 10, as soon as you set up each outline level and
then click OK, the paragraph numbers will _automatically_ fix themselves.

Never, never, NEVER use the "restart numbering" command. It does not create
a stable outline and you're more likely to continue having problems than not.
Besides, if you always set up your outline correctly (see above paragraph)
and---highly recommended---always attach your outline number levels to
specific styles, your outline levels will _always_ chain to each other and
you'll never have to "restart" your numbering again!!

Feel free to search this bulletin board for "outline numbering" and
"gr8auntieokie" to find my other posts about how to set up outline numbering
styles.
