Style locator question (Word 2007)

All of my documents are based on customized templates/styles. I need to
globablly replace certain styles with other styles. Does anyone know what
happened to the "Select all <number> of instances of <style name>" option
when clicking to modify a style?

Faith -

It's still there. If the style is in your Style Gallery, then Right
Click on the style and choose "Select All..."

If the style is not in your Style Gallery, then you can show the Styles
Task Pane by clicking the dialog launcher in the lower right corner of
the Styles Group. If necessary click the Options link to show the styles
"In Use" and then you can either right click and select, or float your
mouse over the style to get to the "Select all..."

You need to be keeping track of formatting to use the Select All x
instances. In Word Options in the Advanced section near the top, select
"Keep track of formatting". Once you do this then the option will be
enabled.

I have found that the problem with enabling the "Keep track of formatting"
option is that it creates a new style for EVERY change you make within a
styled piece of text, for example, bolding a word. I don't want a thousand
extra styles in my template. Surely there's another way to handle this ....

It's not creating a style, the option will show you styles along with the
direct formatting. IOW, what is actually in your document/template. So
for example if you bold a word in a paragraph that uses the Body Text style
the format is actually Body Text + Bold.

You can tell the difference if you look to the right of the style name those
that appear as a result of direct formatting won't have the style indicator
(¶, a, or ¶a, ) next to it.

Ideally, the direct formatting should be replaced with a style, for example
instead of Bold use the Strong character style, but if you click the Options
link at the bottom of the task pane you'll see a section for "Select
formatting to show as styles". If you turn off the options listed then
you'll only see Styles in the task pane.
