style displayed? using homemade template

Hi,

This site has been so much help already... :)

Context: I have a Word template I built for our office. In
the template I have defined various paragraph styles and
various character styles. The Style button on the
Formatting Toolbar displays the paragraph or character
style where the cursor is currently sitting.

Question: Why does it sometimes display the paragraph
style and other times the character style? I would like it
to only display the paragraph style. Can I make it only
ever display the paragraph style in this toolbar button,
instead of the character style?

It displays the character style if the a character style has been applied to
whatever is currently selected; otherwise it displays the paragraph style.
