style changes when copied from document to template

I have three styles, codeline, codelineindent1 and codelineindent2. The
latter two are based on codeline.

Codeline is numbered (not outline numbered), and in the version of the
styles in the DOCUMENT, codelineindent1 and codelineindent2 duly inherit the
numbering.

When I copy all three styles into a document template (not Normal), the
latter two styles change to "no numbering". I can't find a way to remove the
"no numbering" and I can't find a way to have all three styles share a single
number sequence.

Does this have something to do with the different sets of numbering choices
in the document and the template?

Or is it just document or template corruption?

Thanks.

How are you copying the styles? If using the organizer, you need to copy
them three times to maintain links.

For numbering styles, you need to follow the directions in: How to create
numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word document
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. (For
bullets see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html, the
subject is related.)

These are not headings or outline numbered - it is plain single-level
numbering. It keeps trying to MAKE IT into outline numbering, which I don't
want.

I looked at the clear and helpful directions you referred me to, but they do
not apply in this case.

Thanks,
