Stuck with Please wait...

Vista has been stable on my laptop since it came out. I turned it on this
evening and both cores of the cpu were showing continuous 100% usage which
never happens. Eventually a little box appeared with some message about
security but before I could read it the desk top disappeared and it was
replaced by the blue and green Vista background and the message "Please
wait...". This has gone on for about an hour. The hard drive is doing
something. The laptop isn't connected to the internet just now. I tried
shutting it down with the off button but it just went into standby which it
isn't set to do normally. I have a fully up to date edition of Windows Live
One Care and the machine is connected to the internet via a Netgear router
with the firewalls turned on. Any ideas.

Try hitting F8, and going into safe mode.
Also, if you have access to a bootable DOS disk, try that and see if you can
get to an A prompt. If you can it is definitely a hard drive or OS prob not
motherboard.

A Trojan is sending 12 million spams from your IP?

If so, the problem is self-correcting inasmuch as your ISP will terminate
your internet connection.

Check the lights on your modem...
