stuck in a windows xp loop?

Two nights ago when I was last on the computer - all was fine - in the
morning Windows XP was stuck in a loop and no one had done anything in
between. It continues to attempt to boot up, over and over again. First it
attempts to boot up, only gets to the Windows page, then it shuts down, less
than a minute later it attempts to boot up again, getting to the Windows page
again, it shuts down, and so on and so on. I cannot access anything, except
I've tried the safe mode with F8 but nothing works there either - it does the
same thing when attempting to boot up. Can anyone tell me what else I can
try?

try booting up with
your windows cd and
log into the recovery console.

when you get to the recovery
console command prompt run the
following commands:

chkdsk
fixboot

then "exit" and try to
reboot with out the cd.

the section on
"how to use the recovery console command prompt"
will explain the above:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

if the above fails, you can
use you windows cd and
do a "windows repair".

this is better than a
"re-installation" of the o.s.

here are the instructions:

Windows XP was already installed on my computer when I bouth it several years

If you can keep Windows running long enough:
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button.
Clear the Automatically Restart check box, and click OK all the way out.
Restart your computer.

If you can't get into Windows to do this, try this if you have SP2 installed:
Star the computer, and repeatedly press the F8 key to enter Windows Advance Options
Menu.
Use the up and down arrow keys to select 'Disable automatic restart on system
failure' and then press the Enter key.
Use up and down arrow keys to select the operating system to start.
Press the Enter key to start Windows.

If you are restarting due to an error, this will allow you to see the blue screen
error causing it, after which you can post back with the full details of the error,
and hopefully someone here can help you with it.

What were you doing on the computer just prior to this happening? Did you install
or update any software or hardware?

This is probably *not* going to be an easy one to crack.

This is the error number involved:
0xC000021A: STATUS_SYSTEM_PROCESS_TERMINATED
from http://aumha.org/a/stop.php#0x21a

"This occurs when Windows switches into kernel mode and a user-mode subsystem, such
as Winlogon or the Client Server Runtime Subsystem (CSRSS), is compromised. Security
can no longer be guaranteed. Because Win XP can’t run without Winlogon or CSRSS,
this is one of the few situations where the failure of a user-mode service can cause
the system to stop responding. This Stop message also can occur as a result of
malware infestation or when the computer is restarted after a system administrator
has modified permissions so that the SYSTEM account no longer has adequate
permissions to access system files and folders."

I was not doing anything prior to this happening, no new installation or
hardware. When I used it last it was fine, in the morning it was stuck in
this loop. It had not been shut completely down though from internet access,
and I wondered if some how in the middle of the night it could have picked up
a virus ( I do have Norton anti-virus and have never had problems before),
the computer had no reason to start up in windows (and continue looping)
because Windows had never been shut down in the first place. If this info
helps limit what to try, please let me know - in the meantime I will work on
the links you sent.

In response to the links you sent. 1st link - although a couple years ago I
had system works from Norton I never installed Go back because I didn't think
I needed it since Windows has a system restore in it. 2nd link - although
Internet Wxplorer is on my computer I generally access internet through
Advant and only use Explorer occasionally if a program or site works better
with it. As far as I know - no maintenance policies are being applied and
automatic updates for both XP and Explorer were truned on at the time of my
problem. Link 3 - I had already tried most of the safe mode options, the
directory repair mode said the disc's were clean. I didn't try debugging
mode because I didn't know what other computer it would be connected too, and
I didn't try enable boot logging as I'm not sure I understand what that is.
Nothing else worked, it just sent me back into my windows loop again.

well, if your machine came
preloaded, then there is likely
a hidden partition with software.

go the website for your
computer and access the
faq's, troubleshooting and
the online manual for your
model.

basically, since you do
not have a windows cd,
then you options are limited.

however, you could take
the hd out and install it
as a slave on a functional
pc, then use the functional
operating system to diagnose
your slaved hd.
