Streamlining an unweildy Word document

I work with what has become a 109MB Word file, composed solely of paragraphs,
text tables, and index coding. I want to streamline it as much as possible to
speed up loading, saving and indexing. Can I turn off all options referring
to "background" without destroying this document? Will this make a
difference? Is there any other way to streamline this document without losing
the content?
 
The upper limit for file size for a text-only Word document is 32MB, so your
document must contain graphics?
