Strange XP Freezes...

Sometimes my Windows XP (professional) will freeze. I still see everything
going on (usually only one program will become a white window in the normal
'not responding' fashion), but I cannot click on anything. I see the programs
functioning normally, my mouse works fine. I can CTRL-ALT-DELTE, and open the
task manager, and it pops up fine... But once again, I cannot interact with
it, even though I see it's working fine.

To fix this, I have to CTRL-ALT-DELETE and log off, which will close the ONE
program that is acting in the normal 'not responding' behavior, and I can log
back in and resume to use the computer normally.

Here's my specs:

Windows XP Professional
1GB RAM
Pentium 4 1.8Ghz Processor
nVidia GeForce 6600 GT (probably doesn't matter, but there may be a defect I
don't know about?)

Thanks in advance.

Hello Rein; It could be at least three possibility; but need more
info...when did this start to happen:

1 Hardware: did you install or upgrade any new devices like a video
card, memory (ram)recently???

2 Software: did you install any new programs, applications, drivers,
update recently?

3 Pests: When did you last do a full scan for virues, spyware,
maleware, adware last????
Is your scanner's (antivirus, spyware and etc.) currently updated,
actively scanning in the back ground or scheduled to perform scans on a
regular base? I have seen a lot of programs that are thought to be,
turned on but instead are lying dormant and not protecting the
computer. Also I recommend the three Amigo scenarios for protection of
your computer. Just like the story, comic and movie the three Amigos
ride together and compliment each other to get the job done. The three
Amigos are a 1 well known antivirus, 1 well known spyware programs that
scans in the back ground constantly and 1 well known spyware, adware
program that can be scheduled or manually scanned on a regular base.
Since I prefer free programs I will suggest Avast antivirus, Windows
Defender Spyware and Spybot S&D or / also AD-Adware SE
