Strange windows update error...

I keep receiving the following error when trying to enter windows update.

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:
I choose to reinstall, it goes through a process( I do see something about
an active X control being used, but it goes away fast)

I retry and I get the same error.
Any ideas?

It sounds like you have removed the active X control and/or some program is
disabling it.
Are you running SpyBot, Spyware Doctor or such that would stop it from
running/installing?
