Strange Windows/Norton Error Message

P

Pete

I just started getting a strange icon with balloon tip in the icon tray at
startup. It could have something to do with teatimer in spybot (which I
just enabled yesterday, and dumped spysweeper), but I don't see why. I am
using xpsp2 with NAV 2004.

After Windows gets done loading, there is a brief icon (with associated
balloon tip) that shows up in the icon tray (lower right) for about 10
seconds, and then it disappears. It says something about my computer may be
at risk because my antivirus program is not enabled (but it really is).
After the icon and balloon tip disappear, then the normal Norton icon shows
up, and it says auto protect is enabled (like always), and everything is
okay.

I have rebooted several times and it will not stop. When I first enabled
teatimer it didn't do it, but it started doing it just today after I
shutdown and rebooted. Any idea what is going on and how to fix it.

This is an addendum to the above. I restored a deleted item that spybot
found yesterday (it was about a virus disable notification in the registry).
That didn't help. I reran spybot and it was clean (and did not pick up the
notification this time). That didn't help. I disabled teatimer at startup,
and that didn't help.

So, I believe I need to change the registry switch for the disable
notification regarding antivirus programs (the one that spybot found
yesterday that I restored - but It still doesn't work right). Can someone
please tell me where the switch is in the registry - I haven't a clue :).

Thanks....Pete

Hi Pete,

Norton sucks worse that Windows - get rid of it! The problem you might
be having is that the XP security center is not detecting your Norton
antivirus software, so it will nag you. May I recommend googling for
Avast or AVG free antivirus software? You may also go to this link to
get them:

Good luck!

Thanks Capitan...I know Norton sucks, and will put AVG in my xp when the one
year runs out shortly (I already put AVG in my old Me, after the NAV year
ran out in it - Symantec lets you put it in two pc's, for your info).

I just don't know why this problem I wrote about happened all of a sudden.
It is definitely tied in with spybot somehow, like I mentioned. Something
happened in the registry, and it didn't get corrected even though I restored
the change - NBD.

If you google it - the security center problem is a known problem in xpsp2.
If you read symantecs explanations, they acknowledge the problem, but don't
really tell you how to fix it - duh! It is gobledygook. As far as I am
concerned Symantec and McAffee are both bullshit. Try getting a hold of a
human being on the phone sometime.

For your info, Let me tell you how I stopped the damn pop ups (false
alerts). I went to the security center in control panel, and there is a
"resources" list to the left. I clicked on the "change the way Security
Center alerts me" and uncheked the alert box for virus protection. I always
know if my NAV is active because it is in the icon tray all the time. Just
thought I'd let you know.

Do you know anything about teatimer. I had spysweeper before (running
resident). The spyware resident programs get on your nerves after a while,
because you can't shit without a damn pop up warning you what you just did,
and do you want to keep the change, da da da da. A good example is - even
if I get a notification that there is an update available for Norton, the
damn spysweeper window would come up at the same time. And it looks like
spybots teatimer is going to do the same crap. I don't download anything
automatically.

Take care...Pete

I have the same problem; just ignore it. I prefer to think its a problem
with Window's Security Center, not Norton/Symantec. I've never had a problem
with SAV.

Hi Pete,
I have the same problem. The warning comes up for a few seconds at boot up,
then goes.
It seems to me that Windows starts the various applications at boot up in a
random order. Sometimes other applications start before Norton has started
so you get the warning. When Norton eventually starts (in my case a few
seconds later) then the warning goes away.
I guess Norton does not read this NG. I have never seen any comment from
them.
The above is only my guess. I would like to know what really causes it.

To all...I figured out how to stop it by unchecking the virus alert box in
the security center (like I explained to "capitan"). Take care...Pete
