Strange, Unwanted Icons?

I would like to know all about these strange little icons,
that show up everywhere ~~ Why, and from where are they
coming. They are ususally all over my desktop, and always
all over in my 'MicroSoft Word Documents/Folders, every
time I create a new 'Word' page ~~ it turns into one of
thes awful files with the awful icon?

Is there any way to stop this from happening, or at least
find out WHY it is happening?
 
Thanks, Kelly ~~ for the help/info. I am going to give
suggestions a try. These files/icons have been so pesty --
it will nice if I ever get rid of, or stop them from
showing up. Thanks again -- appreciate you.
