Strange Things are Happening...

Some curious things are happening on my XP Pro laptop.
No audio in Media Player, but audio is fine with non-Microsoft products,
e.g. Real Player. Not able to use FTP, Can't install latest Flash player,
Mail works fine. Problem is O.S. related. This happened after an upgrade
from 98se, not a clean install.
Scans were done with several apps, and the system appears to be free
from viruses, etc.
I think there may be an O.S. database that is corrupt.
I found something in the KB, however the rebuild command was very arcane.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

No, your problems are malware related. Virus scans, trojan removers, adware
removers and spyware removers; all run from safe mode and again in normal
mode is a partial solution.

Thanks for the reply, Joseph.

I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot, Defender, AVG Antivirus, CA Internet Security,
and several others.
I believe the system is clean. I'm sure it is an O.S. problem, mainly
because my internet connection is fine,
yet the O.S. diagnostics say there is a problem. I know there is an O.S.
database that, if corrupted, can cause these problems. I believe that if I
were to run the rebuild command, it would clear the problems, however, I
can't seem to find the command again... I had found it a week or two ago,
but unfortunately, I didn't document its location in the KB.
There is a DOS command to do it, and I am going to search for it again, but
was hoping that someone here could
get me there quicker!

Thanks,
Dave

That lot usually catches any virus, but i have had one that got by them all
only to have ClamAV find and remove it. ClamAV is an "overnighter" though.
I used the rebuild sub-command once or twice, i think it belongs to
scanreg, which is a console only program. It too produces different
results in safe mode than normal mode. Have you tried sfc /SCANNOW in
normal and safe modes?

Hi Joseph,

I found my notes, and I believe the problem is with the WMI (Windows
Management Instrumentation) database.
I am going to rebuild it, and see if that helps. If not, the next step is
using WMIC and MOFCOMP.

If I am successful with these, I will post back here with my findings.
