I have a strange symbol at the cursor and it appears at the beginning of each
new line. There is also a dot after each word. How can I fix this ?

It's probably a pilcrow (¶). Turn it off by clicking on the Show/Hide button
on the tool bar. A new pilcrow is added each time you depress the
enter/return key. It denotes a new paragraph.

Hi: Thank you so much for your response. I am a complete idiot when it comes
to computers. I don't have the show/hide option in my tool bar. I tried to
customize the toolbar to add the option, but there is no option for show/hide
button.

it should be on the toolbar when you are composing a new message or replying
to one - if not, look on the tools, options menu of the message form and
uncheck it - it's on the view tab - Show formatting marks... All to get rid
of both that and the dots between words.
