Strange symbol in email text field

A strange symbol has started to appear when composing an email.

It is a symbol with two vertical lines close together with a little bump at
the top left of the first line. The two lines and connected together at the
top.

Alos, when typing an email each word space is replaced by a dot.

Anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it?

Funny, going through all the trouble describing the sign...

¶ = pilcrow, also called paragraph sign.

As Robert already has mentioned, Ctrl+Shift+8 will toggle it on/off.
