I've hit a key while typing an email which has turned on a
symbol

it is before each line and looks like a two vertical slashes with a curly top,

wish I could explain it better any help would be appreciated.

Just click on the [¶] button, and it should go away.
Or use CTRL+( if you don't see the [¶] button.

Actually it is CTRL+* which is for most keyboards CTRL+SHIFT+8 (the * on the
numeric pad doesn't do the trick)

That is interesting! Hovering over the [¶] button (Word 2003) gives me
"Show/Hide ¶ (Ctrl+()". What does it show when you do it?

I am on a Japanese keyboard, where the '(' is on the '8' key. So the
correct answer is not 'CTRL+(' nor 'CTRL+*', but really (as you wrote)
'CTRL+SHIFT+8'.

CTRL+* is listed here but the fact that it is actually CTRL+SHIFT+8 makes
sense because you send a key code which the computer translates to a
character. For me that would be a * and for you a (
