Strange sounds in XP

My computer keeps repeating an ascending and descending tonal pattern.
It's the same sound XP makes when a cable connection is disconnected
or new hardware is added. Thing is, everything is running properly on
my machine, and I haven't added any new hardware recently.

It begins after I boot up and is driving me crazy. Any suggestions?

Sure, cotton balls in your ears....

Have you checked the control panel sounds scheme, to see if for some
reason (or lack thereof), a new sound has been activated?

Are you sure your CPU cards are all firmly seated, cables in place, etc.?

Are you sure you're not just hearing things....

Positive. Actually, the strange sounds stopped after I fired up the
machine after I returned home from work this afternoon. I guess
turning off the machine and peripherals must have done the trick.
