My system is WinXP Pro/SP2 with all current updates. It has been working
very well. Suddenly, I had no sound. When I opened Control Panel/Sounds &
Audio Devices the default "Volume" tab reported "No Audio Device" Under the
Hardware tab the Microsoft WINMM WDM device reported "A driver for this
device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this
functionality (Code 32)"
The system has speakers attached and a wireless USB headset (both of which
used to work)
Following the Troubleshooting tips, I uninstalled the WINMM device and
re-booted and now everything works again? Following the 2nd part of the
Troubleshooting tips I ran the Add Hardware but it didn't find any new
hardware. It seems that uninstalling that device cleared the problem.
