Sound problems

I recently got fed up with Vista and installed XP Home edition on my Dell
Inspiron 531.

After some minor hassles, I got my network and video display working
correctly, but I can't for the life of me to get any sound of any kind.

I can boot with a Kubuntu demo CD and get sound with no problem, so I know
my hardware is working.

Device Manager lists an item under System Devices labeled "Microsoft UAA Bus
Driver for High Definition Audio", which appears with a yellow circle and
black exclamation point on it, so I assume this is the culprit.
R-Click/Properties states "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for
this hardware. (Code 37)", whatever that means.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi B.
Try this for a pack of drivers, when reverting to XP

Is this machine running SP3 yet? HD Audio is only support via a patch
on SP2 or by installing SP3. Even then, you may need to get some
updated drivers or the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility
installed.

SP3 is installed. I have the chipset utility from the Dell site installed,
but if there's another one from Intel, I'm not aware of it.

Believe me, I've installed everything the Dell site has to offer for this
system under WinXP. I DLd and installed a package of device drivers
purported to fix problems going from Vista to XP. I've managed to get my
network back and all of my video modes, but sound just refuses to work.

The problem seems to be with "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition
Audio" mentioned in Device Manager. No matter what I install or what I do,
I cen't get rid of "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this
hardware (Code 37)", whatever that means.

Did you give this a shot?

Ok, I think I see the issue now. My hunch is this is a Realtek ALC888
so you'd best get the HD driver from RealTek. WAY newer than what Dell
has:

It's a bit slow but see if it clear it up for you. Let me know how it
goes.

Out of all the stuff I've DLd, something finally worked and my sound is
back.

I'd be lying if I claimed to understand all this, but thanx to eveyone who
helped me out.
